About PBC: Our Services & Our Process

What is Patriot Benefit Consulting?

Patriot Benefit Consulting (PBC) is veteran-founded and veteran-led. We fight beside veterans to ensure their service is accurately represented through clear, comprehensive medical documentation. Through our Patriot Medical Network™, you’ll be connected with trusted doctors and supported by a dedicated consultant from start to finish.

Does PBC charge for services?

Yes. Our providers are independent medical professionals who charge for their time and medical expertise. They are carefully vetted to ensure exceptional credentials, experience, and professional ratings. Every evaluation, DBQ, and Nexus Letter is completed by a licensed provider trained in VA standards—delivering accurate, thorough documentation to support your claim.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes. We offer payment options so cost is never the reason you go without strong medical evidence.

Can I still use a VSO, DAV, or another organization to file my claim?

Absolutely. Many veterans work with VSOs to submit claims. We complement—not replace—them by providing the VA-ready medical evidence that makes your claim stronger.

Can I use your services if I have an open appeal or claim?

Yes. Whether you’re filing an initial claim, an appeal, or a request for an increased rating, PBC can step in to provide accurate, thorough medical documentation at any stage.

How does PBC differ from a VA-appointed doctor?

PBC coordinates independent medical evaluations conducted by licensed, third-party medical providers. These evaluations may include a comprehensive review of medical records, treatment history, and supporting evidence. The resulting medical opinions and documentation can provide additional medical insight that may be considered alongside other evidence as part of the VA’s decision-making process.

How does PBC differ from my doctor?

Your primary care doctor is focused on treatment, not VA claims. Most aren’t trained to complete VA paperwork. Our providers are. They know how to produce DBQs and Nexus Letters that meet VA requirements and fully reflect your service-connected conditions.

What if my Intent to File date is about to expire or I have a submission deadline?

We can act quickly. PBC will prioritize your case and connect you with a provider right away so you don’t miss your deadline.

About A VA Disability Rating Increase

Can I increase my VA disability rating?

Yes, it’s possible. Veterans can request an increase if their service-connected conditions have worsened or if they believe their current rating does not reflect the full impact of those conditions. The VA ultimately makes all decisions on disability ratings. What PBC does is put you in the strongest position by providing accurate, VA-compliant medical evidence that clearly documents the reality of your conditions.

Does the VA provide back pay for increases?

In some cases, the VA may issue back pay if an increase is approved, typically based on the date your claim or Intent to File was submitted. The amount and eligibility are determined solely by the VA according to their regulations and review process. While PBC has no role in VA payment decisions, we focus on ensuring your medical documentation is accurate and complete to support a fair evaluation of your case.

How do I request a VA disability increase?

You must submit an increase claim directly to the VA. This is where PBC helps: we match you with trusted physicians in our Patriot Medical Network™ who provide Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) that enhance your claim by showing that your condition has worsened or was previously underrated. This evidence strengthens your claim and gives the VA a clearer picture of your service-connected conditions.

How long does it take to get a VA disability increase?

Some claims may move through the process in a matter of weeks, while others can take several months to reach a decision. This can be dependent on the VA’s workload and whether additional information is requested. While we can’t control VA processing times, PBC works to ensure your documentation is complete and accurate, minimizing delays caused by missing or incomplete evidence.

Should I file for an increase in my VA rating?

If your service-connected conditions have worsened over time or if you believe your current rating does not reflect your daily limitations, it may be advantageous to request an increase. A higher rating can mean more monthly compensation and access to additional benefits. PBC can’t guarantee an increase, but we can make sure you submit the strongest, most accurate medical evidence possible so the VA has a clear basis to decide.

About Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ)

What is a Disability Benefits Questionnaire (VA DBQ)?

Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) are medical examination forms that the VA uses to evaluate the severity of a veteran’s disabilities. These forms are instrumental in the process of applying for a service-connection or increase in your VA disability rating, as they guide the VA to properly rate the severity and daily impact of your condition. It is essential that DBQs are completed accurately and with attention to detail, documenting all aspects of a veteran’s worsening conditions. At Patriot Benefit Consulting, we work with a network of private doctors who have an understanding of the requirements needed for completion of DBQs.

Who can fill out a VA DBQ?

Any qualified medical professional can assist veterans with completing DBQs. Veterans can choose to be seen by either a VA doctor or a private medical provider to evaluate their disabilities. All medical providers examining veterans as part of the veteran’s claim process are required to follow the VA’s exam and documentation guidance.

Do I have to go to the VA for DBQs?

Veterans can choose to have either a private medical provider or a VA doctor reevaluate their disabilities and complete DBQs for their disability claims. At Patriot Benefit Consulting, we work with doctors who are passionate about helping veterans. The doctors in our network take a caring and diligent approach and play a valuable role in assisting veterans with the process of obtaining medical evidence to support their VA claims.

About Nexus Letters

What is a Nexus Letter?

A Nexus Letter is a medical opinion that explains the connection between a veteran’s diagnosed condition and their military service. Within the VA disability process, it is used to establish whether a condition is “at least as likely as not” related to service, or whether a service-connected condition has caused or aggravated another condition.

Can you win a VA claim without a Nexus letter?

Yes, many VA claims can be granted without a Nexus letter, especially when there is clear in-service documentation and strong medical evidence linking the condition to service. However, a Nexus letter can be extremely valuable in cases where the connection is not obvious, has been previously denied, or involves secondary conditions. It helps strengthen the claim by providing a clear, medically supported link that the VA must consider.

Can I write my own Nexus letter?

No. A Nexus Letter must be written by a qualified medical professional to be considered credible evidence for a VA claim or appeal. While examples may be found online, there is no legitimate template that can be completed independently. For conditions such as PTSD, depression, sleep apnea, and others, the opinion must come from a licensed provider who can deliver a well-reasoned, medically supported conclusion.

Do VA doctors write Nexus letters?

In most cases, VA-employed providers do not provide Nexus letters for disability claims. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, they typically do not offer independent medical opinions outside of their official roles. Veterans seeking an independent medical opinion are encouraged to work with a qualified private provider who is not affiliated with the VA. Patriot Benefit Consulting partners with independent third-party medical professionals who conduct objective evaluations and provide detailed, medically supported documentation when appropriate.

How much does a Nexus letter cost?

The cost of a Nexus letter can vary depending on the provider. Some charge a flat fee, while others use contingency-based pricing tied to a veteran’s outcome. At Patriot Benefit Consulting, our pricing is straightforward and aligned with standard private healthcare rates—no percentages or hidden fees. We also offer free consultations with no obligation, so you can better understand your options before moving forward. If you have questions or would like to get started, our team is here to help.
